My New Etsy Store Opens Today – Blooms and Butterflies.Art

My new Etsy Store opens today, Blooms and Butterflies.Art.  Flowers have always been a passion of mine and this summer I wanted to do something different than I have done previously.  Back in May I decided to explore further these beautiful creations.  I wanted to capture some of what I saw but also take that a step further.  Fast forward after this desire made me obsessed and seeking out classes, new gear to achieve what I wanted and trial and error, I managed to capture some of the beauty that is only temporary during this season.  I wanted to get even closer to these flowers.  The details, the textures and curves, the colors that at times my camera couldn’t handle, it just amazes me.  The desire for me to capture these flowers also led me to seek out places that had them available.  This has led me to some of the most beautiful places where I have been spending my time, that has inspired me greatly.

I have had my Flower and Butterfly instagram, dedicated to just butterflies and flowers since March, because I probably have the most photographs of these, than any other subject besides my grandchildren…oh and my cats….and my dog, lol.  I wanted a outlet dedicated for them.  I almost closed this account because I couldn’t keep up with two instagrams and the closer that became, I realized I didn’t want too.  I wanted to keep photographing these beautiful flowers and butterflies and share them as long as I could.  I am no where near done processing what I have already taken and will most likely still be processing through the winter months.   My flower (and hopefully soon) butterfly watercolors will also be added to this store as well.

This store wasn’t planned but now I am happy to have it and have a place exclusively to share my butterfly and Flower art and photography.  There will be more added and many things fine tuned but for now the flowers and blooming and I’m excited to go spend more time with them today!

Please follow me on my new Etsy Store, Facebook Page and Instagram for almost daily Flower and Butterflies Art and Photography!

Dahlias! Fine Art Flower Photography

Lately I can’t seem to get enough of flowers. Not just photographing them, but also just being in their presence. My summers are usually all about sunflowers but this year the Dahlias have just over taken me. Recently I met Nina, at Patchwork Dahlias who grows these beautiful flowers! She has such beautiful blooms and provided me with such amazing blooms!!! I was and am so inspired. I wanted to do these flowers justice and took them into the studio and here is a preview of what I am working on.  I’ve spent all weekend with these beautiful flowers and have a lot more to share in the future.  Fine Art Prints of these and others available soon.

Flowers Art & Photography!

This summer, one of my goals was, and still is, to explore manual focus and photograph differently than I have in the past.  I am seeing things so much differently this summer. These flowers were taken this past weekend and I am very proud of them.  All of them were done with manual focus.   A few of these are actually practice shots taken at my home.  I wasn’t even considering using manual focus a year ago, but it’s reawakened my love for photography.  A lot of these I am also going to also paint this winter.  I have learned over the years to follow my heart.  One of the things my heart loves and I enjoy immensely is flowers and butterflies.  My heart just lights up when I am near flowers and butterflies.  I’m still going through the photographs taken in the last several weeks but these and more are available on my website for purchase.  More to come!

These Dahlias and more are available for purchase by going here:  Flowers and Butterflies

Flowers and Classes

Recently a few sales came out on Creative Live for classes and they came at the perfect time for me. I was in the middle of acquiring lenses, and selling lenses I no longer used.  One of the classes was Creating Painterly Photographs by Kathleen Clemons.   I have and love photographing flowers and butterflies, but I have been wanting to explore this further and on a deeper level.   Macro photography and still live and painterly seems to be where I am living at the moment and I LOVE it.  Kathleen is an amazing flower photographer and the simplicity of her methods are even more amazing:

Here are a few I have taken since the class.

Here is a link to this class if you would like to take it yourself: Click for class

Kathleen uses Lensbaby lenses a lot in her photography, and I almost purchased two of them but in the end couldn’t do it.  Soft focus is a challenge for me and while I love the effects that can be created with these lenses, some of the effects I just don’t like at all, but that is just me.  I have spent years learning and growing in what I photographs and getting clear sharp focus and struggled in the past with my photographs being too soft.  This new way (softer) on purpose is challenging enough for me.  It bothered me a great deal not being able to control where my focus was (on the lenses) and where the blur was on those lenses.   It’s there, you have to work with it.  In saying that, you control where you put the focus and the blur in your pictures but you have no control on the effect for those lenses but it’s in the sense, that is what they are for.  For this type of photography and if that is what you want, it’s great but I ended up purchases two lenses and lens filters to go with them and recreated something on my own that I can take off when I don’t want the effect and want sharpness.  I will most likely purchase a lensbaby in the future but for now, I love what I am creating without and what I have created on my own.  The bokeh that my current lenses produces is so pretty I am going to live there awhile!

Prints are available for purchase on my website.

Art Journal Timeline

Since I have started to art journal, I am surprised to to go back to my previous art work and find that these were created at the same time but a year apart.  It’s how I feel, I’m longing for Fall.  From left to right first one is 8/16, second is 8/17, third is 7/27.

When I started painting, a lot of the paintings I were attracted too, were in groups that were related to art journaling.  I never got it and I didn’t understand it.  At that time, how can you spend so much time on art that gets hidden or that the world doesn’t see.  I couldn’t wrap my head around it but loved the art and the artists creating it.  My classes began.  As I started painting something started happening, something changed inside me.  More and more emotions were coming out that I didn’t know were even present.  Suddenly I totally understand why art journaling made so many people happy and why so many people were doing it.  It wasn’t for anyone else, it’s for the artist.  I am so grateful to now know this because I fought it for a long time because (or so I thought) because I always had better things to do.  Now it’s one of the most important things I do because I know how much it helps me, and how much I need it.

There are so many things I have learned in the past several years that I could write a book, but one thing is for sure, what I am painting not only represents these changes of where I have come from, it also shows where I am striving to go.

Happy Friday and weekend Everyone!

Here is a recent water lily I photographed at Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvania.  It started raining and I loved photographing the drops falling in the water.  Lucky for me I had a umbrella.  Have a wonderful Friday!  Rainy Water Lily and other photographs like this can also be seen by following my other instagram account dedicated to my love for butterflies, dragonflies and flowers @butterflies_dragonflies_Flowrs.  Prints are also available by clicking here.

Longwood Gardens is now one of my favorite places.  If you haven’t ever had the pleasure of visiting, click here for more information.
